About This Episode:

Several thousand applications have been submitted to Kentucky’s Office of Medical Cannabis for the 74 available medical cannabis licenses that will be awarded in a lottery drawing in October. This includes 600 applications for 16 available cultivator licenses and more than 4,000 applicants for 48 dispensary licenses.

Many see great potential in Kentucky’s medical cannabis, but what has the Bluegrass State done to build a medical marijuana program that will benefit both patients and business owners?

In the latest Weed Wonks, Jordan Wellington hosts Sam Flynn, Executive Director of the Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program, for an in-depth talk about how Kentucky regulators managed to speed up the timeline for the launch of the state’s medical market, and how a bipartisan approach to policy-making has helped them build a market that will provide ready access to medical cannabis while also ensuring a viable economic environment for cannabis.

Flynn discusses how the state has built partnerships and trust with the cannabis industry, why adult education is so important when it comes to cannabis policy-making, and how policymakers and the cannabis industry can educate one another about what’s best for the market and the public as a whole.
